Harry Belafonte, Jr. is a humanitarian and political activist known best as a singer from the 1950’s who started the craze for Caribbean inflected music. “The Banana Boat Song” became his signature song. Born in New York City of a Jamaican mother and Martiniquan father in 1927, Belafonte was sent to live with his grandmother in Jamaica from 1932 to 1940. When he returned, he worked as an assistant janitor in a building. He was given two theatre tickets from one of the tenants and subsequently took acting classes in New York. He took classes with Marlon Brando and Sidney Poitier and performed at the American Negro Theatre.

His first musical release “Matilda” in 1953 became a hit and the album “Calypso” sold over 1 million copies in 1956. Calypso style music then became the rage with Belafonte being crowned the King of Calypso. He continued to perform throughout the late 50’s and 60’s but his career took a downturn when the Beatles were introduced in the States and changed the face of music.

Belafonte became a political activist early on in his career. He used some of his success to support his political and humanitarian activities. One of them was in the support of the civil rights movement. Because of his foreign roots, he was still racially discriminated in some parts of the United States, particularly the southern States where he refused to perform. Belafonte became close friends with Martin Luther King, Jr. and supported King’s family at this time since King was only receiving a pastor’s wage of $8000 per year.

In the 70’s and 80’s, Belafonte continued performing in other countries outside of the United States, where he was still popular. He received a record deal with EMI and released “Paradise in Gazankulu.” This became his last studio album and it focused on South African apartheid policy at that time which he was against with. Belafonte worked many of his humanitarian efforts into his performances. Africa was his focus during the 80’s, he was partly responsible for organizing the “We are the World” effort for Africa as well as singing for Live Aid. In 1987, he became the UNICEF goodwill ambassador. He performed in another concert for Africa which raised additional funds and then launched a campaign for the awareness of Rwanda. In 2001, he supported the campaign against AIDS in Africa and was award the Bishop John T. Walker Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award for his efforts. Belafonte has been UNICEF ambassador for many years highlighting the children of Africa for many of his efforts.

Belafonte, using his musical platform, has been known for saying controversial statements on US foreign policy. He has been particularly opposed to the administration of George W. Bush, including Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice, both American African, and aligning them to the house slaves of Civil War days.

Belafonte has been married three times. He has four children and currently resides in New York City with third wife Pamela.

Belafonte is one of the many people who have developed an interest and love for playing poker. Poker is one of the games which have become very popular with the introduction of the internet. Many people have been exposed to it and as a result it commands a huge following. Each individual plays poker for various reasons. Belafonte also has his diverse reasons why he enjoys the game. He particularly plays Texas Hold’em. He became an addict when his friends started playing the game and they become millionaires overnight. It was so interesting that he felt that he could give it a try. This was the beginning of Belafonte’s love for poker.

His love for online poker sites is quite a unique one and very different from the perspectives held by others. While other people play poker for the richness associated with it, he plays it for fun among other reasons that interests him. It is his view that poker is not only a game of cards but also a game that requires skills, intelligence and luck. He admits that even though luck is beyond our control; it is very necessary and important in the game. This is the reason why people who have won huge sums of money at one time do not have the fear of losing it again. They always go back and try to win again despite the high risk of losing it in the next game.

What thrills him most is the urge to go back in the game despite the high probability of coming out empty handed. This urge is so strong that he cannot resist it. The following are some of the major reasons behind Belafonte’s love for poker. He admits that he derives a lot of fun and pleasure in playing poker. Since he is a social figure, he feels happy when he meets various people during the game. He has been able to make a lot of friends in the process. Some of these friends have been very helpful to him in various ways ranging from supporting his career to offering various helpful advices that has really improved his lifestyle. Belafonte’s love for poker is derived from the fact that he can have both online and offline friends.

He also admits that playing on full tilt poker can be quite profitable, even though he is categorical that it does not form part of his major interest in the game. When luck is on your side you are likely to be a millionaire overnight in this game. But since he is a philanthropist, all the wealth that he has acquired through this game has been distributed to the needy and other charitable programs across the world. Because of his willingness and determination to transform the world into a better place, he has used the proceeds from this game in setting up benevolent funds and forming organizations to achieve his mission.

He admits that poker is intellectually motivating. The game requires that you strategize a head of your opponent. You have to know how to counteract your opponent’s tactics; this requires that you have to be very smart. Belafonte takes pride in outsmarting others.

Poker game is a seductive game that can get anyone hooked on it. Many have prospered and made a fortune out of this game. Those who have made poker their profession have created a remarkable place for themselves in the world of poker. Talking of players of genius, Chip Reese leads the league of professional poker players.

If you are an ardent poker player there is no chance of you not knowing Chip Reese. He is a well known figure who was known as a poker ace by his friends. Though he was sent to law school with a dream of him becoming a great lawyer, he could not fulfill his parents’ ambitions. David ‘Chip’ Reese was a lawyer turned poker player who never made it to Stanford, as a strange thing happened which changed his life totally.

Chip Reese was born on March 28th, 1951 in Dayton, Ohio. He was not only an all round achiever but also a good sportsman. He was educated at Harvard and Dartmouth and became a football star of these universities. He joined the Law program in Stanford after receiving his undergraduate degree.

Poker was never new to Chip Reese. He had been playing poker since he was a child. His mother was a good poker player who taught him tricks and strategies. With a flair for the game and enough training from his mother he could play games, such as Backgammon and rummy, well. His life took a twist when he was travelling to Stanford. He took a trip to Las Vegas and took part in a weekend FullTilt.net tournament in which he won $60,000. This boosted his confidence and made him decide to take up poker professionally. But he kept this a secret from his family.

From then onwards Chip Reese took part in all the major tournaments and made it a point to win them. In the year 1978 he participated in the Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo and won $1000. In the year 1982 he won $5000. The year 2006 made a great difference in Chip Reese’s life. He won the H.O.R.S.E event in 2006 with a winning prize of $1.7 million. He won $2 million, which was a huge amount, in the first two years of his poker career. This was the highest amount which any poker player in the world could make.

Later, he realized that, to make more money, he would have to take up cash games and play solid poker instead of playing high profile tournaments. Reese had been an ardent strategist and an alert player at the table. He used his powerful memory and calculating ability to win money pots in the games. He became familiar with every thread of gambling, which helped him triumph in the world of poker.

Though Reese did all this to earn money and fame, his main consideration was his family. He always wanted to give his family the best, which made him, take up poker as a career, and why he made a substantial amount of money in this game. The world will ever remember him as the king of poker.

Poker like any other game has rules and regulations. It is important to acknowledge that many players find it a tall order to stick to rules pertaining to the management of the poker bankroll. It definitely would feel a bit limiting to have to base the buy-in on the amount you have in your account. PokerStars.com players often feel like they have lost an opportunity when they have to play a three for five percent of the amount they have in their bankroll account. It is unfortunate that it seems like their money would not be utilized to the full potential. This feeling stems from the fact that in other places, higher capitals mean higher returns. Realize however that this is poker and therefore this may not apply here.

Of critical importance is the preservation of the poker bankroll in your procession. As much as the primary goal of the game is to have better returns and increase the bankroll, the one philosophy that you must incorporate in this game is get better get paid. In this case, you are expected to improve your gaming strategy and only move up the levels when you have earned the position. This will definitely incorporate a lot of patience as you will have to learn to play the game correctly while keeping the profitability on the lower echelons. However, acknowledge that you will be rewarding yourself for a game well played while only moving up the levels only when you have earned the position.

The good thing about this philosophy is that you will be making mistakes at a manageable level where you can contain your losses while still learning from them. It is important to acknowledge that good poker players incorporate the ability to make profits in the levels they are playing currently. In this case, when you are profitable at the lower levels, it means that you will be financing your assent to higher levels which come with even more enticing profits. You need to understand that remaining in one level is not much of an issue if you are making profits. In addition, you could make use of multi-tabling to increase your profits.

Another good thing about the playing in the lower ranks is that your opponents will most likely be the newer ones and therefore making numerous errors regularly. However, you will be facing tougher opponents in the higher ranks. In this case, therefore, you should only be in the higher levels if you have earned it. As you play more games in the lower ranks, you will be getting better and being more consistent in playing correctly and winning. With time, you can be a true poker star and be sure of not only moving up the levels but also winning there as well.

The basic idea in this philosophy is to preserve your bankroll while allowing it to grow. This is definitely tantamount to using other people’s investment in the game to grow your money. Some of the things that you cannot afford to ignore include careful observation, strategizing learning as well as profiling. You cannot underestimate the importance of making mistakes as it is from these that you learn in the poker game.

When you’re betting on the NFL, like thousands of us do every single week of the season, you need to make sure you pay really close attention to the line movements. If you spend time analyzing the line movements on each of the games that week you can usually find some good value in a couple of the games. Handicappers that don’t spend the time to watch the line movement in the NFL often don’t end up with the best value for their money.

At the beginning of each week during the NFL season you’ll see most online sportbooks posting their point spreads for the week’s games. During the first few hours that the line is posted it will see significant movement in most cases for several reasons. One of the big reasons is because a lot of the sharps or betting syndicates will feel that one or multiple lines are not where they should be, thus making their bets early. Since this group of people bets a large amount of money it will cause the line to make a sharp move in the point spread.

For instance, if the line opens up at –6 in a game and the sharps had the spread at –7 or more then they’ll jump on the –6 the second that they possibly can because they know that the public will eventually hammer the –6 if they notice it. Once the sharps bet the –6 the books are forced to increase the spread and generally in these situations it could move from anywhere to –7 – -9. At this point the early line movement would be done on this game and it wouldn’t move much anymore until the public decides what side they’re going to be on for the game.

If the public continues to bet on the favourite throughout the week the pokerstar.net spread will slowly continue to increase, often by a -.5 point or maximum a full point. If you want to be on the favourite in the game then you should do it as early in the week as possible so that you don’t end up with a –10 point spread when the game initially opened up at –6. You could risk waiting on the game and hope that the spread goes down right before kick-off, but this might result in not being able to bet the game. The only way the spread would go down in the scenario above is if the sharps decided to middle the game before kick-off and take the +9/+10.

With the sharp know hammering the underdog you can expect the spread to go back down by a point or two before kick-off. This would be a good time to jump on the favourite if you missed making the poker bet earlier in the week because the spread should be back down to about –7/-8. There are a lot of reasons why the lines move throughout the week in NFL ranging from where the money is being bet to injuries. Sometimes you might not hear about an injury until late in the week and if it’s one of the team’s best players then you can expect to see the line adjusted.

Texas Hold’em poker has become quite popular in the recent times. However, not many people know much pertaining to how the game is played. This article is aimed at educating you on the game. At the beginning of the game, a standard 52-card deck is shuffled by the dealer.

It is important to note that dealers do not engage in playing the poker game. In cases where there is no dealer, which is often due to their shortage, games are self-dealt where the deal changes every hand but following clockwise direction. This is unlike games with dealers where the dealer button progresses in the clockwise direction with every hand for each player.

What happens when dealing? Two cards are dealt to every player facing down i.e. hole cards. In the Texas Hold’em poker the identity of these cards must be kept secret. This is especially emphasized by the use of one hand to shield them and turning up one of their corners. Once placed on the table, only the player who was dealt the cards can consult them at any particular time in the hand. The dealer eventually lays out five cards in front. In this case, the players would have to combine the first cards they were dealt with the other five. The best poker hand will be the one who combines two hole cards with three of the others, one hole card with four and sometimes just the other five and none of the whole. In this case, they will have accumulated all the bets.

What are blinds? Texas Hold’em poker incorporates two forced bets (blinds) rather than Antes. At the beginning of the game, two players are on the left of the dealer and place a certain amount of money in the pot. The amount of pokerstars money is increased as time goes by in tournaments to eliminate players. Posting blind occurs where the player on the immediate left of the dealer places half of the betting minimum while the other player places the whole minimum bet.

Flop- This happens after the first round of betting where the deck’s top card is discarded by the dealer. This is also known as burning and is carried out to prevent cheating. This is necessitated by chances that any player has an unfair advantage having seen the identity of the top card accidentally. Once the dealer has placed the burnt card next to the flop, beneath the muck or the next open card, they place the other three cards on the table facing up. These are the cards that are known as the flop.

The turn- Occurs after the second betting round is complete where another card is discarded while the next card is exposed and included in the Board. This card is known as the Turn card.

River- This occurs after the completion of the third betting round. Another card is discarded while the dealer exposes the final card and adds it to the Board. The added card is known as the River car.

Poker has very technical words like every other game. There are also rules and regulations that one must abide to in this game. Incorporating them would take quite a bit of experience, time as well as patience. Learning through the process is definitely the way to go.

Even though the poker sites today are putting in concrete efforts to provide a fair game to the players there are several who are not yet convinced. There are several conspiracy theories that are making the rounds of the internet. Given below are a few of the most popular conspiracy theories of online poker and the truth behind them.

Bad beats to good players

The theory is that the wpt poker sites make profits when bad players don’t end up losing all their chips to the good players. If a bad player lasts longer the poker site will earn more through rake and therefore these sites help these players. The truth is that online players are generally passive and weak and they end up calling too often. In such loose games, good hands find it hard to hold up. Another explanation is that online poker tends to be fast paced. On an average around 60 hands are played every hour which is double the number of hands played in the real world. For this reason, the good hands end up getting sucked out twice as often every hour.

Action flops

Another theory is that the poker sites make money through rakes when the pots are larger. For this reason the site deals flops to more than one player. A possible explanation to this conspiracy theory is the same as above. Loose play is typical of online poker and this means that the flop will have a chance to hit multiple players. Also, because of the fast paced game there will be more confrontations per hour. Many players tend to believe that the cards are not randomized in online poker. In fact, in real casinos there are far higher chances of the deck not being fully randomized. In online poker the cards are truly randomized since there are no physical cards present.

Cash out curse

The cash out curse is that a titan poker download player will go bust or have bad luck once they cash out their winnings. The theory is that the poker sites do not want the players to withdraw their money and they prefer if the player keeps all their money in the account and continue playing so that they can earn more through rake. For this reason, they deal bad beats to players that cash out their winnings from the site to redistribute that money to others who may pay back more to them.

The truth is that poker is a very volatile game and luck does play a major role in the success or failure of a player. The balance in the game is forever fluctuating. If the balance is reduced there is a higher chance of going bust sooner than when a player maintains a cushion. Cash out curse happens not because of the poker site dealing bad beats but because it is just statistics that come into play.

It can be said that there is no truth behind the above mentioned conspiracy theories at all.

A poker tournament, like any other tournament, is a structured competition where players aim to win by accumulating all of the chips in play. There are three principal types of poker tournament. The first it the “elimination,” or “freeze out,” which is the most common type. In this structure, all player start with the same number of chips and play continues until one player has accumulated all the chips. As play progresses, active players from different tables will come together; reduce the number of tables and players. The payout structure rewards players at the final table based on the number of chips they hold, ensuring that all players remaining receive a share proportional to their stack.

“Shootout” tournaments work differently as tables are not combined as players are eliminated. Each table plays down to a single winner who then proceeds to the next round of the tournament. For example if the fulltilt poker tournament started with 24 tables of eight, the second round will feature 3 tables of eight, and the final round will feature the top three. Shootout tournaments tend be short in duration than elimination events

“Rebuy” tournaments are structured so that players who have lost their chips can buy more chips and rejoin the action after an initial period of time, ranging between one and three hours. Rebuy tournaments tend to have play that is more aggressive early on, because you can rejoin the action in the event of chip death. Because of this, rebuy tournaments tend to have inflated prize pools, given the entry fees and the number of rebuys during the course of the night.

Satellite tournaments are like “mini” tournaments that take place before the main event. For example, a tournament with a $2000 entry fee, will see ten players put up $200 a piece and then proceed to battle it out over the card table. The winner, advances to the main event.

Poker tournaments can and are held just about anywhere, any time. A group of friends tends to be the driving force behind many college and university poker tournaments. Many casinos, could organize them and online gambling sites have a daily tournament. Poker tournaments also take place on cruise ships and ocean liners, with cruises devoted to the game. The major tournaments will vary from country to country and continent to continent. In the USA, the World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker is held in Las Vegas. The European Poker Tour, founded in 2004 by John Duthie is now the largest poker tour in the world by virtue of its players and prize pool. The Asia Pacific Poker Tour takes place in Macau annually, and the Crown Australia Poker Championship or “Aussie Millions” is the largest tournament in the Pacific.

The internet revolution has sparked its own share of online poker tournaments and the Word Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) and the Fulltilt.com Online Poker Series (FTOPS) are the biggest ones with a million dollar prize.

So, you ready to play?
